For Jessica Pegula, one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour over the last 12 months, a quarterfinal at her “home” Grand Slam would be the third “final eight” of her season so far.

And her first at home in the U.S.

But Petra Kvitova, who has made just two quarterfinals as she plays in her 15th consecutive US Open, has other plans.

The 32-year-old Czech has never done particularly well in New York, where the heat,  humidity, and air are tough on someone who deals with allergies.

She wasn’t anywhere close to being among the favorites before the tournament began. And she’s still way down the list in the US Open odds as the round of 16 matchups begin.

Mixed Bag for Kvitova

Kvitova played a young Russian qualifier, 18-year-old Erika Andreeva, in the first round and was pushed hard – for a set.

Her second-round match never happened, as opponent Anhelina Kalinina withdrew before they played.

But after that, came a huge challenge against fellow (former) Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza.

Muguruza has had an awful year, self-admittedly struggling with motivation. But she was in near-vintage form against Kvitova in a match that might well have been a Grand Slam final 5-6 years ago.

Kvitova escaped, 12-10 in the third-set match tiebreak, after being down 2-5 in the third set.

Pegula’s Run to the Round of 16 a Stroll

With the exception of a tiebreak middle set lost to qualifier Yuan Yue, Pegula might well have reached the round of 16 without having dropped a set all week.

Even with that, the 28-year-old has had a good draw and has taken full advantage of it.

But what she will need to do on Monday against Kvitova is up her level, considerably.

Pegula, generally, plays at a high base level. But there isn’t necessarily always another gear she can go to when faced with a high-quality opponent playing her best.

What you see is kind of what you get. But you get it match in and match out.

And with her consistency, most often Pegula wins because she remains steady, while her opponent has a hiccup or two. That’s not meant as a criticism; on the WTA Tour these days, it’s the highest compliment.

It might not be fancy, but it has been supremely effective.

Kvitova’s play both in Cincinnati and the US Open is sending a message that not only is she not done yet, she still has a lot of tennis left in her.

At her best, she’s a better player than Pegula. But it’s executing that level that is the challenge for her in this one.

She’ll have to mix up her serve, because Pegula’s backhand return could neutralize the lefty’s best friend, the wide serve from the ad court. She’ll have to make sure she is the one bossing the points, because Pegula defends a lot better than she does.

But all of that is within her capabilities.
