There have been plenty of upsets during this US Open.

But unseeded Ajla Tomljanovic making the final eight – which required getting past Serena Williams in the third round and then following it up with a straight-sets win over the in-form Liudmila Samsonova – is up there.

Jabeur enters this quarterfinal matchup as a solid -218 moneyline favorite with Tomljanovic coming back as a +180 underdog. The over/under on total games is 21.5 with -110 odds both ways.

Tomljanovic is the only unseeded player in the quarterfinals, and was one of only four in the round of 16.

The question will be if she can keep it going, against a very different opponent than the ones she eliminated in the previous two rounds.

Jabeur Looking for Major Result

After dispatching two lower-ranked Americans in the first two rounds, Jabeur played to seeding – beating No. 31 Shelby Rogers, and then No. 18 Veronika Kudermetova in her next two rounds.

They were not easy matches. But on the plus side, the hard-hitting Tomljanovic has a fairly similar game style to those two. So Jabeur will have had plenty of practice dealing with pace as she looks for her first US Open semifinal.

Jabeur has won both of their previous meetings, with the most recent being on clay in Rome last May.

That one wouldn’t be much of a surprise, as Jabeur is far more proficient on that surface.

But they first met more than a decade ago, when Tomljanovic was the No. 1 seed at a $25,000 clay-court ITF in Casablanca, and ranked No. 197.

Who has more to lose? Obviously Jabeur, ranked No. 5 and likely to rise from that after this tournament, is the favorite and at the stage of her career where she is supposed to be making deep runs in majors.

For Tomljanovic, the work is “almost” done. She defeated the legend. And then she didn’t have a let down and followed that up with another win.

And that win came with far less electricity in the crowd, in a much emptier Louis Armstrong stadium next door.

But despite that, she’s still way down the list of current favorites to win it all in the Women’s US Open odds.

But at some point, the emotions of the week are going to get to her.

Maybe not; the Croatian-born Aussie who lives in Boca Raton, Florida, has shown a level of determination and resilience that many didn’t think she had.

But Tomljanovic plays her best tennis against players who give her the pace she loves to give right back.

Jabeur, obviously, is not that sort of player. She will do everything she can to disrupt Tomljanovic’s rhythm. And she will make her move up and back from the baseline, something Tomljanovic can do if she has to, but doesn’t particularly enjoy.

The Aussie no doubt gained some notoriety with her impeccable handling of a very difficult situation on the night she defeated Williams. Most casual fans likely hadn’t even heard of her before that eventful, dramatic night.

But Jabeur’s personality and game have gained her a following everywhere she goes these days – she got far more mileage from losing the Wimbledon final than Elena Rybakina got from winning it.

And it seems there are Tunisians everywhere. And they always show up.

Tomljanovic will never face as partisan a crowd as she did the night she defeated Williams. But this is a completely different dynamic. She played her first Grand Slam tournaments back in 2013; only at Wimbledon 2021 did she made a quarterfinal for the first time. (And, to seal it, she did it again this year).

But beyond that is uncharted territory.
