It often doesn’t work out that way. But the two players who are arguably the best female players of 2022 have arrived at the singles final in the final major of the season.

Iga Swiatek is seeking her second Grand Slam title of the season, after winning the French Open back in June. She’s listed as the -175 favorite in the odds above.
Ons Jabeur, still looking for her first major, is into her second consecutive Grand Slam final after making the final day at Wimbledon, but being denied by Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina.
Swiatek Survives Sabalenka
When Aryna Sabalenka was up a break in the third set of their semifinal on Thursday, it somehow never felt over.
Sabalenka, who has overcome a serious case of the service yips this season even if she’s not totally out of the woods, managed to get to the final four. But in the end, looking down the court at the world No. 1, her belief evaporated.
And it was Swiatek, who kept her cool more or less throughout, who leaped up and grabbed that spot in the final Saturday.

The Belarussian, who repeated as a semifinalist in New York, came into press wearing the dark sunglasses favoured by those who knew they’d let an opportunity slip away, and shed a few tears in the aftermath.

Jabeur Trying to go One Step Further
Jabeur, a 28-year-old Tunisian who is finally coming into her own after a long, gradual climb up the ladder, has had her share of disappointments in finals.
She has won three. But she has lost five in the last 16 months – including Wimbledon in July. And, most pertinent to this final, Swiatek laid a 6-2, 6-2 smacking on her in the Rome final in May.
She has suffered plenty of disappointment. And while those finals losses do generate some scar tissue, she’s not quite at the point where it will get in the way of her finally coming through.
The US Open final is a great place to do that. If she can do it.
Jabeur’s 6-1, 6-3 win over Caroline Garcia, the Frenchwoman who had been in the best form of the entire field coming into this US Open, took just an hour and six minutes.
Soirée difficile 😞
Le cœur y était mais pas le niveau de jeu. 💪🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻🙌🏻🦁🐝🎾

Will be back for more challenge soon 💪🏻
Best of luck to Ons for the final ! #FlyWithCaro #usopen

It was a shocking result; but despite Garcia not playing at her recent level, a lot of credit has to go to Jabeur, who competed with calm and with confidence.
A little of that as she tries to hold up the biggest trophy of her career on the biggest stage in the sport can’t hurt.

Swiatek vs Jabeur Pick
A Grand Slam final, most of the time, really isn’t about the tennis or the specific matchup. It’s about who rocks up on the day, keeps calm, stays in their comfort zone, doesn’t make too many mistakes and doesn’t get down on themselves if they get down early.
That said, Swiatek knows how to do this. And she can just look back at Rome to remember, if indeed she’d forgotten.
It feels like a straight-sets Swiatek win. But there’s plenty of uncertainty there (even at +133). She could have a hiccup that’s long enough to cost her a set.
Still, the Polish No. 1 should win – she’s been the favorite all along in the odds, even without much recent data to support it.
And she should beat the spread.
