Holger Rune – full name, Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune – is a Danish teenager exactly a week older than world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.
But while his path isn’t as insanely precocious, he’s seriously on the rise and stands at a career-best No. 25 in the ATP Tour rankings this week.
He’ll have 15 years on his opponent at the Swiss Indoors in Basel for Saturday’s semifinal, as he meets No. 6 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, 34.

Rune will enter Saturday’s match as a significant -170 favorite with Bautista Agut coming back at +130 on the moneyline.
Rune on a Real Roll
If Félix Auger-Aliassime is finishing the season strongly with two tournament wins in the last two weeks and looking for a third, Rune has been only one or two embers cooler.
Rune reached the final in Sofia in early October. And then he won Stockholm last week, defeating No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
Without first-round byes as a top-four seed, Rune is on a 12-1 roll, while Auger-Aliassime currently stands at 11-0.
In Stockholm, before his 6-4, 6-4 win over the Greek, he came back from a set down against Cameron Norrie in the quarterfinals, and then did the same against Alex de Minaur in the semifinals.

Bautista Agut Picking Up Steam
Bautista Agut’s recent record was just the opposite. Including the US Open, the veteran Spaniard had lost in the first round in three of his last four tournaments.
But he did do well in Davis Cup, winning all three of his rubbers at No. 2 singles.
So it was a mixed bag.
But the 34-year-old hasn’t dropped a set so far in Basel. His toughest match was in the quarterfinals, a tight 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over the comebacking Stan Wawrinka.

Down 3-5 in the second-set tiebreak, he ran off four points in a row to win it and avoid a decider. The win also will put him back in the top 20 next week, where he arguably belongs in perpetuity. Bautista Agut has finished every season since 2014 in the top 25.
He has been successful for a decade by being solid, by tracking every ball down, by hitting the ball harder than you think, and by serving – when he needs it – better than you also might think.
Rune vs Bautista Agut Pick
Beyond the large age difference, it’s tough to pick between these two.
Bautista Agut gets the huge edge on experience, Rune on momentum.
He also has those young legs. And he’ll mix in the drop shot a lot more than the Spaniard will.
But where Bautista Agut is calm, Rune can get edgy. The longer the Spaniard stays with him, the more Rune potentially can stray from his game.
But the young Dane has had so much success in recent weeks, he’s going to feel even better about his chances than he normally does. And he normally feels very, very good about his chances.
It’s a really, really tough one to call. But given neither one is a quick-strike artist by instinct, it sets up as a long one – with three-setter odds checking in at +130.
