Caroline Garcia has been where Coco Gauff is about to go.

But the 28-year-old Frenchwoman is trying to get back there, while the 18-year-old American is just getting started.

Despite the decade’s difference in age, Tuesday will mark the first US Open quarterfinal appearance for both of them.

Garcia will enter Tuesday’s match as a slight -127 favorite with Gauff a +102 underdog. The game total is sitting at 22.5 with the under a -129 favorite.

Garcia (at +550) and Gauff (at +650) are right behind world No. 1 Iga Swiatek as favorites in the Women’s US Open odds.

Two Quarterfinal Rookies, a Decade Apart

Nearly 11 years ago, when Garcia was about Gauff’s age, she made the US Open final – in the junior girls event.

She was heartbroken when she lost to American Grace Min, who never really broke through in the pros. At that point, Garcia was already playing pros, but was ranked No. 135 on the WTA circuit.

At the time, Gauff was seven years old.  She’s technically eligible to play the juniors now. But will most likely be in the top 10 – with the grownups – for the first time come next Monday.

Garcia was ranked No. 75 in the world when she left the small grass-court tournament in Birmingham, England in June after losing to Katie Boulter in the second round.

She’s 30-4 since then, with titles in Bad Homburg (on grass), Warsaw (on clay) and Cincinnati (on hard court).

If she defeats Gauff in the quarterfinals Tuesday, she may well end up back in the top 10 next Monday.

It would come virtually on the four-year anniversary of the Frenchwoman reaching her career high of No. 4 after the 2018 US Open.

She has figured out the way she always needed to play. And she seems to have the right team around her, that is helping her keep the faith in the aggressive game style even though it doesn’t work on every point.

Unless Garcia develops a throwback set of nerves, Gauff will be subjected to a relentless attack that, if they’ve scouted, will involve trying to break down Gauff’s still-fragile forehand.

The stroke is much improved, as long as the young American isn’t under pressure. Create that pressure, and it’s still the chink in her armor.

Already, Gauff is the No. 1 doubles player in the world, after winning in Canada with countrywoman Jessica Pegula.

The two were eliminated in the second round by the pickup team of Leylah Fernandez and Daria Saville. So they are free to fully devote their energies to their singles.

For Gauff, winning the tournament is not out of the question. And in the tournament where Serena Williams – a player Gauff has often spoken of as the catalyst to her becoming a tennis player – likely ending her long career, it would be a passing of the torch.

The younger Gauff leads her head-to-head with Garcia 2-0.

But both those meetings came before Garcia’s renaissance.

Garcia was kind of in the doldrums when Gauff defeated her in Doha in February.

Last year at Indian Wells (in the one-off October edition), their meeting was in the second round – the opening match for Gauff, who was seeded while Garcia (then at No. 59), was not.

That one was somewhat close.

This match will come down to first-time jitters. Whomever handles them best is likely to win. Give the edge to Garcia, but it will take awhile.
