When you have a round-robin format, you hope that all the matches will be meaningful on the final day of group play. That’s only half true on Nov. 5, when Coco Gauff meets Iga Swiatek and Caroline Garcia plays Daria Kasatkina in the 2022 WTA Finals 2022.
But that latter match (4:30 p.m. ET) puts everything on the line.

Kasatkina The Winner Last Time
Kasatkina is the underdog in this year’s event, as the lowest seed and maybe that relative lack of pressure is the difference maker, as Garcia – always high-strung – seems to be putting a lot of pressure on herself to perform this week.
Garcia vs Kasatkina Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2021 | San Jose (R16) | Outdoor Hard | 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 | Kasatkina |
2019 | Wuhan (R64) | Outdoor Hard | 6-2, 6-2 | Garcia |
The two last met in the summer of 2021 in San Jose, which has proven to be a happy place for Kasatkina. She made the final that year and won it this past August.
The straight-up attacking style the Frenchwoman has (finally) adopted in 2022 to great effect works best when she’s getting consistent pace to work with because she needs to take more risk on every shot and it doesn’t take much to throw her off. At which point she begins to doubt herself.
The Russian’s game doesn’t give Garcia much rhythm
And Garcia won’t have gained any confidence after the quick way Swiatek dispatched her when they met on Thursday.
Garcia vs Kasatkina WTA Finals 2022 Prediction
Garcia will consider it a relief if she makes the semifinals; Kasatkina will consider it a bonus and so the Russian is likely to swing more freely. She also has a lot less risk in her game, a lot less that can go wrong under pressure.
Best Bet: Kasatkina in Three Sets (+400)
Swiatek vs Gauff Odds
Player | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
[1] Iga Swiatek (POL) | -4.5 (-165) | -480 | O 19.5 (-117) |
[4] Coco Gauff (USA) | +4.5 (+128) | +360 | U 19.5 (-109) |
American teenager Coco Gauff’s debut at the WTA Finals has been a rough one. Shut out in doubles. Shut out so far in singles, the 18-year-old is playing just for pride Saturday, in her final match of the week.
Unfortunately, she’s up against world No. 1 Swiatek – who has had her number every time they’ve met.
Swiatek vs Gauff Head-to-Head
21 (May 31, 2001) | Age | 18 (March 13, 2004) |
Warsaw, Poland | Birthplace | Delray Beach, Fla. |
5-9 | Height | 5-9 |
11 | Career WTA Singles Titles | 2 |
No. 1 (April 4, 2022) | Career-Best Ranking | No. 4 (Oct. 24, 2022) |
No. 1 | Current Ranking | No. 4 |
$14,265,077 | Career Prize Money | $5,415,091 |
66-8 | 2022 Won/Loss Record | 38-21 |
4 | Head-to-Head Wins | 0 |
Swiatek Perfect vs Gauff
It wasn’t a huge shock that Gauff didn’t show that well in the French Open final in June. It was her first Grand Slam singles final, and she hadn’t faced a top-30 player during her run to the final day.
But the match against Swiatek was speedy. It wasn’t a contest, really.
Swiatek vs Gauff Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2022 | San Diego (QF) | Outdoor Hard | 6-0, 6-3 | Swiatek |
2022 | French Open (F) | Outdoor Clay | 6-1, 6-3 | Swiatek |
2022 | Miami Masters (R16) | Outdoor Hard | 6-3, 6-1 | Swiatek |
2021 | Rome Masters (SF) | Outdoor Clay | 7-6 (3), 6-3 | Swiatek |
And when the two met again last month in San Diego in another highly-anticipated match with Gauff having a home-country advantage, she did no better.
Swiatek vs Gauff WTA Finals 2022 Prediction
Swiatek is arguably the worst possible opponent to try and fashion a salvage job against for Gauff.
It seems more likely that this will be yet another straight-set win for Swiatek – who is on a mission.
And she’ll also want to save her energy for the big matches to come.
Best Bet: Swiatek in Two Sets (-186)
