Alcaraz, world No. 1 and still just 19, met Auger-Aliassime a little earlier this fall, during the Davis Cup Finals preliminary rounds in Valencia, Spain.

The young Spaniard arrived a little late in Valencia – for good reason. He had just won the US Open and become No. 1.

So he wasn’t in tip-form form. It was impressive enough that he was there at all.

Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime had an early exit in New York. And then he was beaten by Soonwoo Kwon in the first Davis Cup tie a few days before.

Auger-Aliassime won that one in three sets. And regardless of circumstances, it’s hard to argue that it didn’t set off the chain of success that has the Canadian chasing his third ATP Tour title in three weeks in Basel.

The two met for the first time last year at the US Open, where Auger-Aliassime also won after Alcaraz retired midway through the second set. It was a quarterfinal and a highly-anticipated one. But it didn’t pan out.

If there is any fatigue for Auger-Aliassime after winning two straight tournament titles in Florence and Antwerp, it’s not showing.

Winning has a way of giving you an extra boost of energy.

The Canadian dropped the first set in a tiebreak against Swiss lefty Marc-Andrea Huesler. But since then he has won six consecutive sets.

He demolished Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round. And he gave the mercurial and talented Alexander Bublik just five games in the quarterfinals Friday.

Auger-Aliassime added 10 aces to his total, and he lost just 3-of-25 points with his first serve, and just 5 of 16 with his second serve. Untouchable.

In a perfect tennis world, Alcaraz would have been able to kick back after such a monster season. Indeed, he hasn’t played that much since the US Open.

But there is still a Masters 1000 in Paris to come, and the ATP Tour Finals – and then the final rounds of the Davis Cup finals, which Spain qualified for even though they lost to Canada in the preliminary rounds.

Alcaraz squeaked through his Basel opener against talented 20-year-old British lefty Jack Draper. But since then, he has more or less looked like himself.

He dropped six games in a win over Botic Van de Zandschulp, and seven against veteran compatriot Pablo Carreño Busta.

Despite an astonishing lack of aces, he’s still winning three-quarters of his first-serve points.

The way Auger-Aliassime is playing, he won’t be the least fazed by facing the No. 1 player in the world – helped by the fact that he just beat him weeks ago.

He is on a roll, and it’s hard to know who’s going to stop it; if not the No. 1, then who?

The Canadian will need to keep his serving rhythm where it has been and while Alcaraz is an excellent returner, it’s not his main brand.  Auger-Aliassime is probably fresher mentally despite his recent success and his workload. The two have won about the same number of matches in 2022. But Alcaraz has done it in 16 events; Auger-Aliassime has played 27.

It smells like an upset, but Auger-Aliassime has to win it in straights. Everyone is aware of the Spaniard’s comeback capabilities.
