After losing the last two of a three game set to Boston, the Guardians (13-15, 9-7 away) venture off to Yankee Stadium to begin a series with the Yankees (15-14, 9-7 home) who are coming home from Texas hoping to awaken some struggling bats.

Following a 2022 campaign that saw him solidify his spot as a starter in the Guardians rotation, Cal Quantrill has gotten off to a bit of an inconsistent start so far this year.

He’s coming off his worst outing of the season as he couldn’t even get through four innings in a 6-0 loss to the Rockies. The second generation Canadian hurler got banged up for eight hits in that outing.

In three starts against the Yankees last season, Quantrill never allowed more than three earned runs. Two of those starts came in the ALDS, where the Guardians went down in five games to New York.

For the Yanks, Domingo German is looking to bounce back from an injury shortened 2022 campaign. While his ERA isn’t pretty so far in five starts at 5.54, he has averaged 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings, the best ratio of his career. The Dominican native has also kept hits and walks to a minimum, sporting a very low 1.08 WHIP.

So what’s the reason for all the earned runs? He’s been dinged up for the long ball one too many times, particularly in his last two outings where he’s allowed a total of five home runs. Keeping the ball down in the zone and inside the park will do wonders for turning German’s early season slide around.

Yankees Dealing With Big Injuries

Right now, there aren’t many MLB lineups that are dealing with bigger injuries than the Yankees, both literally and figuratively. The 6’6, 245 pound Giancarlo Stanton and 6’7, 282 pound Aaron Judge are both expected to be out for the series opener.

Combined, the sluggers have put up 10 home runs for the Evil Empire in the first month of the season, but without them, the lineup has really struggled to push runs across the plate.

New York has scored three runs or less in eight of their last 10 games. After smashing 62 bombs last season, Judge was expected to once again be the main challenger to Shohei Ohtani in the AL MVP odds, but he’ll have to stay healthy to stand a chance.
