Roughy 57% of the field will miss the cut at a typical PGA Tour event like this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. It may seem rare for one of the favorites to trunk slam, after all they’re expected to compete for the title, but it happens virtually every week.
The likelihood of a missed cut increases as we make our way down the oddsboard, and we’ve identified a prime candidate to MC this week at Detroit Golf Club.

That would be three-time PGA Tour winner Cameron Champ, who’s been no stranger to trunk slamming lately.

Target Champ to Trunk Slam
Prior to his 16th place finish last week in Minnesota, Champ failed to make the weekend in five straight events. One of those tournaments was the John Deere Classic, which is an excellent comp tournament for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Defending 3M Open champion Cameron Champ just went water-water to start the second hole. Lying four in the drop zone. 😬

To quote Jon Rahm these two tournaments wind up becoming a “flipping putting contest”. Detroit GC is one of the easiest courses on Tour, with hardly any trouble to speak of. That puts an emphasis on making birdies in bunches which requires a hot putter.
Cameron Champ – Last Six Starts
Event | Result | SG Total |
---|---|---|
3M Open | 16th | +7.4 |
John Deere | MC | -1.7 |
Travelers | MC | -7.1 |
RBC Canadian Open | MC | -0.9 |
The Memorial | MC | -3.1 |
PGA Championship | MC | -4.5 |
That’s the furthest thing from Champ’s skillset as he’s lost strokes on the greens in six of his past seven starts, and ranks 113th in this field in strokes gained putting and 132nd in short game play.
Also working against Champ this week is the fact that his best skill set, which is driving distance, is minimized. Detroit GC is short enough by PGA Tour standards that even if he hits it 25 yards past the majority of his competitors, they’ll all still be hitting wedges and short iron approaches into the green.
Champ missed the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2021 and is an excellent bet to do so again this week.
Pick: Cameron Champ to Miss Cut (+170)
Rocket Mortgage Classic Make the Cut Parlay
While Champ is a strong fade in all markets this week, there are plenty of golfers who can be targeted confidently in a make the cut parlay.
The list starts with defending champ Cameron Davis, who was our primary target in this week’s sleepers and longshots article. Davis is fresh off a 16th and eighth place result, and ranks sixth in the field in birdies or better over the past 24 rounds.

Next up is Chris Kirk, who finished 12th at this event in 2021 and ranks 18th in the field in ball striking over the past 24 rounds. We’ll add Webb Simpson, who can get as hot as anyone with his wedges and putter, and Troy Merrit who’s finished second and eighth at this tournament over the past two years.
We’ll round out the parlay with Brendan Steele, who we’re getting at a discount after he burned a lot of people last week, and Chris Gotterup who ranks top-22 in birdies or better over the past 24 rounds. Gotterup also ranks inside the top-13 in ball striking and approach shots within 15 feet over that stretch.

Add it all up and we’re looking at a +990 payout if all six golfers can get through the cut line.
