Iga Swiatek’s first WTA Finals experience in Guadalajara a year ago was pretty fraught.
But a year later, after the season she’s had, you would expect a completely different reaction.

She has the easiest of her three group matches Tuesday, as she takes on Daria Kasatkina as a -500 favorite in the WTA Finals odds above.
Kasatkina is the lowest-ranked player in the field, and is making her WTA Finals debut.
Swiatek vs Kasatkina Head-to-Head

Swiatek Dominates Head-to-Head
It was Kasatkina’s great misfortune to run into Swiatek four times in the first half of the season.
And in eight sets, she managed a total of … 14 games.
Each time, it was a wipeout. And since then, Swiatek has only gotten better.
Swiatek vs Kasatkina Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2022 | French Open (SF) | Outdoor Clay | 6-2, 6-1 | Swiatek |
2022 | Doha (R16) | Outdoor Hard | 6-3, 6-0 | Swiatek |
2022 | Dubai (R32) | Outdoor Hard | 6-1, 6-2 | Swiatek |
2022 | Australian Open (R32) | Outdoor Hard | 6-2, 6-3 | Swiatek |
2021 | Eastbourne | Grass | 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 | Kasatkina |
Why the dominance? In the end, it comes down to the fact that Kasatkina, for all her skills, is essentially a defensive player.
And Swiatek can also play great defence, and she doesn’t seem too troubled by the topspin Kasatkina generates on the forehand or on the serve.
And more and more, when the No. 1 sees the opening to go on offence, she takes it. So, potentially, it could be even more of a mismatch.
Kasatkina just isn’t inclined, by game style, to do that. Too often she waits for her opponents to beat themselves.
Swiatek vs Kasatkina Prediction
There is no reason to think Tuesday’s match will have a different outcome.
While Swiatek got her “Finals rookie” nerves out of the way last year. Kasatkina will have plenty of her own.
The combination could, and should, make for a quick victory by Swiatek. It’s actually surprising she’s only at -500 to win.

Gauff vs Garcia Odds
Player | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
[4] Coco Gauff (USA) | -2.5 (-112) | -167 | O 21.5 (-127) |
[6] Caroline Garcia (FRA) | +2.5 (-114) | +135 | U 21.5 (+100) |
The second singles match of the day, featuring popular American Coco Gauff and a resurgent Caroline Garcia, should be much more competitive, with Gauff listed as the -167 favorite in the WTA Finals odds.
More than a decade older, Garcia has come from virtual irrelevance to become a top player again in 2022.
And she has plenty of year-end finals experience to draw upon.
Garcia made the semifinals in singles at her lone previous appearance, in 2017 in Singapore. She battled through a couple of comeback wins during the pool portion, too, before losing in three sets to Venus Williams.
She also made the year-end finals twice in doubles, with different partners.
Gauff vs Garcia Head-to-Head
18 (March 13, 2004) | Age | 29 (Oct. 16, 1993) |
Delray Beach, Fla. | Birthplace | Saint-German-en-Laye, France |
5-9 | Height | 5-10 |
2 | Career WTA Singles Titles | 10 |
No. 4 (Oct. 24, 2022) | Career-Best Ranking | No. 4 (Sept. 10, 2018) |
No. 4 | Current Ranking | No. 6 |
$5,415,091 | Career Prize Money | $13,494,141 |
38-19 | 2022 Won/Loss Record | 41-19 |
2 | Head-to-Head Wins | 1 |
Gauff the Youngest, and a Rookie
She’s only 18, but the pressure on young Gauff to become the next great one is everpresent.
She might have been better off just qualifying in doubles this first time.
Instead, she’s in both, at the end of a long season.
Gauff vs Garcia Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2022 | US Open (QF) | Outdoor Hard | 6-3, 6-4 | Garcia |
2022 | Doha (R32) | Outdoor Hard | 6-2, 7-6 (3) | Gauff |
2021 | Indian Wells (R64) | Outdoor Hard | 6-3, 6-7 (2) 6-1 | Gauff |
The quarterfinal between the two at the US Open had been highly anticipated. But in the end, Garcia was playing so well, it was routine.
The Frenchwoman was ranked No. 76 when Gauff defeated her in Doha. At Indian Wells last fall, she was at No. 59.
Right now, she’s No. 6.
Gauff vs Garcia Prediction
Gauff is the favorite, but she probably shouldn’t be.
Are people expecting the “home-court advantage” to play a role? That’ll be hard to manage, with the crowds very sparse so far in Texas.
