Opening Odds Favor Koepka to Finish 1st on PGA Tour Official Money List for 2019-20 Season

Blink and you might miss the PGA Tour offseason. With the Tour fully in “wraparound” season mode, the 2019-20 season begins with the Fall series starting September 12th at the Greenbrier in West Virginia, and it’s no surprise who’s expected to finish first on the official money list.

Four-time Major winner Brooks Koepka has the shortest odds on the board, followed by current FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy.

The bonus money earned during the FedEx Cup Playoffs doesn’t count towards the official money list, which is why Koepka finished first in 2018-19 despite finishing T-3 at the Tour Championship.

Brooks Knows Best

It’s no secret that Koepka doesn’t treat every tournament equally, but you can guarantee he will show up when the most money is at stake. His record at the Majors and WGC’s – the largest purse events – was incredible last season and the number one reason why he won the most money on Tour.

Only 5 players have had top 5s in all 4 majors in one season.

His three victories in 2018-19 were a career-best, as was his additional six finishes in the top five. He ranked inside the top-20 in every major statistical category and is a very deserving favorite to repeat as leading money winner.

Unfortunately, his odds are way too short to be considered a profitable bet long term. Golf is such a volatile sport by nature, that I’d much rather seek out value in the mid-range than put all my eggs in the Koepka basket.

Time for Cantlay to Take Over?

Patrick Cantlay is widely considered one of the best young players in the world, and appears destined for greatness. He was the former number one ranked amateur in the world and has been trending up since joining the Tour full-time in 2017. He won the prestigious Memorial tournament in June, racked up nine top ten finishes and finished fourth on the official money list last season.

Cantlay posted top ten finishes at both the Masters and PGA Championship, and ranked second on Tour in scoring average.

He finished 2018-19 with better tee to green, ball striking and putting statistics than Koepka, yet his price tag is seven times longer. Sure, he doesn’t have the same type of winning pedigree just yet, but he’s arguably just as talented a player and his +1600 odds are much easier to swallow.
